Chess Team Wins The Shore High School League Championship!
On Wednesday, February 22nd, the Chess Team competed in the Shore High School Chess League Championship Tournament at Monmouth Mall. The team –consisting of Christopher Wu, Kevin Yan, Philip Meltzer, Kevin Lu and Jason Yan– dismantled St Joseph HS in the first round by a score of 4.5 to 0..5
In the second round, High Tech was paired against Rumson Fair Haven. RFH was undefeated during the regular season, but High Tech dissected them on their way to a 5-0 shutout.
So, for the 8th consecutive year, High Tech had made it into the Shore HS Chess League Championship Match!! High Tech was pitted against arch-rival CBA, who upset the defending champion Princeton HS in round 2.
Chris Wu had the team focused and well prepared. He led the way by earning the first win of the championship match. Kevin Yan and Kevin Lu would soon follow with victories that would guarantee a win for High Tech. Philip Meltzer and Jason Yan wrapped things up with 2 more wins. High Tech pulled off a devastating shutout to claim the league title and become the Shore HS Chess League Champions for 2017!!!
Each varsity player was undefeated and earned an individual board award for their performance during the tournament. High Tech won an amazing 14.5 points out of 15 possible points.
In the Extra Player Tournament with 62 participants, Allen Zhang, Andrew Mascillaro and Aryan Shah represented High Tech. Each player finished in the top 10. Aryan earned 10th place. Andrew earned 4th place and Allen finish in 2nd place.
