High Tech Academic Team Places 5th In National Tournament

This past weekend, High Tech sent two Academic Teams to PACE, the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence National Scholastic Championship in Reston, Virginia. On Saturday, the A-team of Steven Liu, Darren Petrosino, Cole Snedeker, and Michael Li went undefeated in morning prelims and 4-1 in the afternoon playoffs, clinching top 8 in this national tournament for the first time since 2015. On Sunday, they went 3-4 among the best of the best to finish 5th place out of 96 teams. The B-team of Samuel Hampel, Frank Grabowski, Selena Liu, and Deepak Gopalakrishnan went 2-5 on Sunday, but were still able to get 55th in the tournament, despite having no seniors.

This is the last tournament that Steven, Michael, Darren, and Cole will ever play for High Tech. Getting fifth place was a proper send-off, being one of the best placements High Tech has ever gotten at a national tournament. You all make us proud. Congratulations on a terrific year.

High Tech's M3 Challenge Team Wins 1st Place and $20,000

Congratulations to our M3 Challenge Team! Of the 877 papers submitted in this year’s MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, the High Tech team’s paper has been judged to be among the top six overall – they are a finalist! This is a distinguished accomplishment, given the rigorous and intense scrutiny that the final paper endured. The team is guaranteed one of the top six scholarship prizes, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, when they compete at the end of April.

Senior Eric Chai had this to say:

“The M3 Challenge is significant because it highlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool for real-world problems. By participating in the challenge, we were able to gain lots of insight into how math can be applicable to any field. The chosen problems highlight this, as they span a wide variety of topics and require a lot of analytical thinking and problem solving to create robust solutions that truly answer the questions at hand."

Dr. Eng, the advisor and coach followed up with this:

“The M3 Challenge is a real-life experience dealing with a very complex open-ended topical issue. The student team must synthesize a mathematical model from an immense amount of research and incomplete information. This Challenge is a new experience for students where there is not a definitive answer. The real-life lesson is how to construct a logical model on the best available, incomplete information to support a conclusion/ recommendation. As additional information is collected, you frequently test the model and make adjustments to improve the accuracy of the model. This is an on-going continuous process, like weather forecasting.”

Snacks With Scientists - Recap and Pictures

Snacks With Scientists is an initiative started four years ago by senior girls from High Tech who wanted to provide an event for young girls where they could learn about career opportunities in STEM fields and meet and interact with females currently working in those fields. The event specifically targets girls in the fifth and sixth grade. This year marks the fourth annual Snacks With Scientists event.

Over 100 girls attended this years event. Sixteen different professionals volunteered their time to come and talk about their careers and interact with the girls. The event is sponsored by the National Honor Society and the Steminist club. Thank you to Ms. Gross, the advisor for both clubs and all the students who helped make this year’s event a success. Thank you also to Delicious Orchards for donating snacks.

Below are some pictures from the event, courtesy of Melanie Chen, Katherine Liu and Annie Zhou.
