HTHS Competes at NJ High School State Championship Tournament
NJ HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
The HTHS Chess Team sent 9 participants to the NJ High School State Championship Tournament on Saturday (3/2) and Sunday (3/3). The tournament included 3 rounds on Saturday and 2 rounds on Sunday.
The Varsity team consisted of Eshan Guha, Michael Kang, Alex Lin, Indus Boddu, and Ritwik Singh. The team performed exceptionally well against an amazingly talented group 58 players representing 19 schools. The team was able to finish in 2nd place only 1.5 points out of 1st place. The 1st place team (Livingston HS) was the heavy favorite to win yet High Tech went into the final round tied with them for 1st place.
The following varsity players finished in the top 20 as individuals:
Alex Lin earned 17th place overall with 3 points (3 wins and 2 losses). His only losses came against the players who finished in 5th place and 7th place. Indus Boddu finished in 15th place. He had 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss was to the player who finished in 4th place. Michael Kang finished in 7th place. He had 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss (to the 2nd place player). Finally, Eshan Guha earned 1st Place. He was the only player in the tournament to win all 5 of their games. Two of his wins came against the players who finished in 2nd and 3rd place.
Congratulations to Eshan. Eshan is the NJ High School Individual State Champion for 2024!!
HTHS had a JV Team too. The team consisted of Gordon Fan, Aditya Choudhary, Henry Liu and Rahul Gupta. The JV Team performed very well on their way to a 4th place team finish. They finished only a half point out of 2nd place and 2 points out of 1st place in a very competitive JV bracket.
There were 47 participants in the Junior Varsity Bracket representing 15 schools. High Tech had 3 players finish in the top 20. Finishing in 18th place with 2 wins, and 2 draws was Henry Liu. Finishing in 10th place with 3 wins was Gordon Fan. And finishing in 5th place with 4 wins Aditya Choudhary.
